Fired in a 40 foot anagama kiln (based on a 5th century Korean design), this piece shows how spending over 100 hours in the kiln getting up to temperature (2400 degrees!) and then cooling slowly for almost two weeks can lead to beautiful crystal development on the surface. This bud vase has a clear glaze applied to the interior (appears grey in this case); the exterior was left unglazed, and the surface results are entirely due to wood ash deposited during the firing. Throwing rings add visual and tactile texture, highlighted by the flashing and ash from the firing process.
